What the Brain Does During Sleep

During REM sleep, the brain processes emotional experiences, regulating the stress circuits that govern mood, anxiety, and behavior. This is why a chronically sleep-deprived child is not just tired — they are emotionally dysregulated, with a nervous system that is perpetually on edge. Studies linking insufficient childhood sleep to anxiety, behavioral disorders, and depression are not capturing correlation: they are describing the neurological consequence of depriving a developing brain of its primary regulatory maintenance cycle.
Naps Are Not Optional
There is a cultural tendency to frame nap dropping as a developmental milestone to be celebrated — a sign that a child is growing up. The neuroscience tells a more complicated story. A 2022 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that nap habituality in preschool children was directly associated with hippocampal volume — the hippocampus being the brain region most critical for memory formation and learning.
Children who nap regularly show better memory consolidation, more stable emotional regulation, and stronger cognitive performance than non-napping peers of the same age. The research suggests that naps are not just rest — they are a developmental necessity during the years when the brain is under the most intense construction.
Building a Sleep Foundation
The single most powerful tool for healthy childhood sleep is consistency. A predictable bedtime routine — the same sequence of events at the same time each night — trains the brain's circadian clock and initiates the hormonal cascade that produces sleep. This is not about rigidity. It is about biology. Babies and young children whose sleep onset is associated with consistent environmental cues (dim light, calm activity, a parent's voice) fall asleep more easily and sleep more deeply than those whose sleep environment is unpredictable.
Early bedtimes are also neurologically protective. Most young children need to be asleep by 7–8 p.m. to obtain adequate hours of deep sleep before the natural early-morning wake window.
Practical Sleep Strategies
Establish a consistent 20–30 minute pre-sleep routine: bath, book, song, lights out
Keep the room dark and cool — both support melatonin production
No screens for at least 1 hour before bed — this is non-negotiable
Maintain the same bedtime even on weekends — consistency is the key variable
Protect naps until age 4–5 even if resistance increases
